Context

Gruppo Espresso is one of Greece's largest coffee distributors, selling beans and coffee machines to hotels and cafés across the country. Because they import their own beans, stock has to be matched against customer type and seasonality: wholesale customers consume much faster than retail ones, so near-expiry stock is best routed to them before it goes to waste. I came on board through working on the inventory side during my final year of high school.

Responsibilities

  • Designed and built an Android app for warehouse staff. Scanning a product barcode and entering the customer and quantity tells the operator whether to ship that product or to substitute another with a more suitable expiration window, so near-expiry stock goes to the customers who consume it quickest.
  • Added a dashboard with month-over-month profit per product and other inventory metrics so management could spot trends without exporting data.
  • Built the mobile front-end in Java and the backend on Firebase.
  • Reduced operational costs by ~25% through better stock utilisation.

What I'm taking forward

First time shipping software that real users depended on every day. Watching warehouse staff actually use the app shaped how I think about UX and error handling. A small, narrowly-scoped tool can move business metrics more than a more ambitious one if it lands on the right problem.
